The western district of Sikkim is highly popular with the trekkers since it has regions with fairly impressive altitude that are ideal for exploring and watching the Himalayas from a close vicinity. The most famous and scenic treks, that explores numerous valleys, streams, trails and beautiful glaciers are the Barsey Trek, Goecha La Trek, Kasturi Trek, Kanchenjunga National Park Trek & the famous Dzongri Trek. You can reach as high as 4200 meters above the sea level through some of the routes. The district is the second largest one in Sikkim, expanding up to 1,166 square kilometers. Apart from a glittering collection of mountains, West Sikkim is also extremely ecologically rich. A part of the Kanchenjunga National Park sits here, sheltering the elusive red panda, which is the state animal. Owing to the elevation of the region, the district enjoys a pleasantly temperate type of climate, which facilitates ample growth of rhododendrons, which bloom beautifully during spring.
